  • 摘要:This paper reports the findings of a study conducted with expert instrumentalists from Brazil and Canada. Thirty-one musicians were interviewed on major influences in the development of their musical expertise: - teachers, family and ensembles. Content analysis of the interview data reviewed a similarity in the responses of both canadians and brazilians. Participants from both countries argued that music teachers, family members and participation in ensembles were important sources of motivation in the course of their careers. A controversy emerged when the issue of music dropout arose. Brazilians showed a larger propensity to dropout from music than did canadians. brazilian women did it more so than their canadian counterparts. As a whole, these results confirm the previous findings about the essential role of teachers and parents in the development of instrumentalists, regardless of their culture. However, culture does play a role in the nature and ways instrumentalists report experiences.
