摘要:Globalisation, the collapse of the Soviet bloc and the concomitant triumphalism of capitalism, the dominance of western model democracy, the unprecedented technological advancement and the recurring economic recession since the 1970s are global socio-economic and political factors that shape contemporary world trends in industrial relations of most countries. The article examines how these factors influence industrial relations policy in Nigeria. The article reveals that the Nigerian government has made efforts to adapt to the global context in labour relations policies by pursuing programmes of trade union decentralisation, and restrictive employee rights. It is observed that the effect of the programmes on trade union development in the country will be negative. The authors suggest among others that labour leadership in Nigeria needs a methodological readjustment to save labour unionism and ensure workers’ welfare in a developing economy that has been engulfed in the globalised capitalist-dominated economic system.
