摘要:give away is an autobiographical sculptural installation. The arrival of a newborn child is usually an occasion for great joy and celebration. When a baby is born and immediately relinquished for adoption, however, the circumstances and emotions involved are more ambiguous. The moment of an adoptee’s arrival is also a moment of disappearance - of genealogy, of identity, of its mother. For the first several weeks an infant adoptee's self is suspended, not belonging to a birth family but not yet placed with an adopted family. Such new arrivals are in a state of limbo. This installation occurs in a vacant shop-front window - itself in a liminal state - hidden behind a curtain, with a series of small apertures providing intimate windows into the world of the subject within. A collection of second-hand plastic dolls, objects which have been once loved and then given away to charity shops, are hanging by their umbilical cords. The infants are awaiting adoption, which will occur at the close of the installation with a cord cutting and relinquishing event.
