Teachers of Elementary School and Pedagogy students of the institution are part of the group. Motivated by the discussions and presentations of the group works , we have proposed an activity to a first g rade of Elementary School class in a private school in Atibaia ( São Paulo State). The planning of the class was based on the Brazilian National Curriculum Parameters – PCN (BRASIL, 1997) since there is the block of content called "Information Treatment", including the study of statistics . The class was entitled " pets" and its objectives were: leading students to know a column chart and know how to interpret it ; counting and comparing numbers resulting from the counting using graphic information ; writing the names of animals , working the vowels and consonants and syllabic separation . We described the steps developed with the class, such as the presentation of the theme, graphing , elaboration and its interpretation and construction of a table. We believe that we could provide a good initial contact with the statistics, encouraging students to observe, make hypotheses , collect data, organize them ( treating them) and read and interpret them when arranged in a graphic and a table . We believe that the choice of the theme was also important, based on interest and " real life" by encouraging students to observe phenomena that occur around them .
