摘要：Il breve saggio intende proporre alcune riflessioni sull'identità dell'autore della History of the Ancient Greece, contribuendo così a chiarire un equivoco che tutt'oggi permane tra alcuni studiosi.L'opera, realizzata dall'archivista William Robertson, venne tradotta in italiano con un discreto successo nell'Ottocento e attribuita al suo più celebre omonimo, lo storico edimburghese che fu tra i principali esponenti dell'Illuminismo scozzese.Attraverso la ricostruzione di momenti significativi del processo di ricezione e di adattamento del testo, verrà descritta la genesi dell'errata attribuzione, concentrando in particolar modo l'attenzione sul ruolo che gli stessi traduttori e stampatori ebbero nel creare, consapevolmente o meno, le condizioni per un consolidamento dell'errore negli studi italiani.This paper aims to reflect about the identity of the History of Ancient Greece's author, in order to clarify a misunderstanding that today still exists among scholars.During the Nineteenth-Century this History, written by the Scottish Keeper of Record William Robertson, was translated into Italian, with a good success, and it was attributed to the famous historian William Robertson, one of the most important exponents of the Scottish Enlightenment.Through the reconstruction of some significant moments in the process of reception and adaptation of the text, I will describe the genesis of the incorrect attribution, focusing the attention on the role that translators and printers had to create, consciously or not, the conditions for the consolidation of misunderstanding.
