摘要：http://dx.doi.org/10.5007/2175-7976.2009v16n21p111A proposta do artigo é analisar as transformações históricas que singularizam a atuação dos médicos no Brasil, dos tempos coloniais, até o início do século XX. Observa-se que a medicina colonial se desenvolveu em meio ao descrédito da população e escassez de recursos, ao passo que durante o período monárquico essa situação tendeu a sofrer importantes transformações. Iniciado o século XX, os médicos, além de dividirem-se em várias especialidades, assumiram a missão de regenerar a raça.
其他摘要：The purpose of this article is to analyze the historical changes in the practice of Medicine in Brazil, starting in the Colonial times, until the beginning of the XXth century. We can state that colonial medicine was developed without many resources and without much credibility among the country’s population. During the Brazilian monarchy that situation has changed and, after the beginning of the XXth century, the medical practice was already divided into several medical specialities and the mission of its practitioners become the own regeneration of the human race.
