Abstract: The author of the article analyses the role played by the Spanish Civil War in Juan Benet’s novels and short stories. The Civil War and its poetic representation is considered one of the most important themes in Benet’s literary works. Departing from Benet’s anti-realistic aesthetics, the author shows how his narrative – in a systematically ironic procedure - destroys its own modes of mimetic representation, pretending to reach other levels of discourse in which the enigmas of war find themselves less resolved than evoked and conserved in their original, terrifying and indissoluble status. Keywords: anti-realistic aesthetics; Spanish Civil War; irony.
