  • 摘要:In what could be seen as a "dry spell" in Philippine Literature in the 1960s appeared a group of young writers who watered this "desert." It may be construed as part of the ebb and flow of literary history, especially in the field of fiction in the Filipino language. But what were not taken into account in past studies were the crucial issues of the time which these young writers had to hurdle. This paper will analyze how these writers of humble beginnings from different provinces confronted what may be regarded as a first-level meaning of the word "desert" in their individual lives when they migrated to the city. While writing for magazines like Liwayway was a form of relief of their desert-like existence in the city, they also encountered a new form of desert in Philippine Literature in the guise of commercialism and the concept of literary canon. The group of young writer-friends went through this desert after a collective decision to push for a common literary goal. The birth of the collection of stories Mga Agos sa Disyerto was their statement against all those who were stunting the growth of Philippine Literature, particularly in the genre of the short story in the Filipino language.
