摘要：This article examines the creation and shaping of an occupation — public school teaching — in 19th century British Columbia. It represents teaching as a contractory endeavour organized around the reproduction of labour power. Drawing upon secondary accounts of teaching and state formation (supplemented with representative documents from the period of concern), the article emphasizes how struggles between different segments of the teaching force and state representatives emerged around changing moral and technical priorities. In the context of state formation and subsequent industrial development, teaching was transformed by the end of the 19th century from a relatively autonomous occupation to a highly regulated and segmented force of dependent state employees. Résumés Cet article porte sur la création et la formation d'une profession — celle d'enseignant dans les écoles publiques de la Colombie-Britannique au cours du 19e siècle. L'enseignement est interprété ici comme une activité entreprise (contractory endeavour) en fonction de la reproduction de la force de travail. L'ouvrage souligne comment les conflits qui surgissent alors entre différents groupes d'enseignants et les représentants de l'État se manifestèrent en terme de priorités morales et techniques sujettes au changement. En cette époque de la formation de l'État et du développement industriel subséquent, le statut d'enseignant se transforme, en fin de siècle, d'une carrière relativement autonome en un corps fortement réglementé et segmenté d'employés publics dépendants.
