摘要：A partir da segunda metade do século XIX intensificou-se a afirmações oficiais do desaparecimento dos índios em Pernambuco e da extinção dos aldeamentos. Somava-se à negação da identidade dos índios, muitos pedidos de invasores dos territórios indígenas e autoridades, para declaração legal da extinção dos aldeamentos, em razão da suposta extinção dos grupos indígenas. Os estudos que vêm sendo realizados nos últimos vinte anos sobre os chamados índios misturados no Nordeste, esses grupos que se mobilizam desde as primeiras décadas do século XX, colocando em questão crenças e afirmações sobre o desaparecimento indígena na Região, conquistando considerável visibilidade política em anos recentes. Constituindo-se, portanto, em um tema a ser discutido na área de História, malgrado ainda preconceitos e o quase desconhecimento, expresso pelas escassas pesquisas sobre o assunto, nessa área de estudo.
