摘要:Summary Casting is one of the commonly used techniques in industries for the manufacturing of metal products. Although sand is used as a mould material for casting, its permeability and thermal conductivity are very low and hence affects the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cast product. Therefore using alternate material for the mould may result in better permeability, heat transfer rate and thereby better properties. In the present work, steel balls are used as mould material and the effect of grain size on the permeability of the mould material is studied. Steel balls of different diameters namely 0.18mm, 0.6mm and 1mm which are commercially available were used. From the experiments conducted, it is confirmed that coarser steel balls showed more permeability and thereby can help in easy escape of hot gases (from the molten metal and mould material) during pouring of molten metal into the mould.
