摘要：This contribution deals with several current proposals on employing the notion of a third actor as elementary to the genesis of social order not only in the domain of general social theory but also within the theory of functional differentiation. This project fails in its re-interpretation of the concept of a third actor in classical sociological texts, and it also fails in reconstructing the complexity of functional differentiation in terms of a sociology of different types of third actors. More particularly, the aim of establishing microfoundations for a theory of functional differentiation in terms of general concepts of dyadic or triadic relations as suggested recently in this journal by Gesa Lindemann fails because it insinuates a continuum of sorts between social theory and the theory of society. Alternatively, the present contribution suggests giving up on attempts to derive a theory of society from microfoundations to be established by a more elementary form of social theory.↓Der Beitrag reagiert auf einige aktuelle Vorschläge, eine Theorie und Soziologie des Dritten nicht nur in die grundbegriffliche Anlage der Soziologie einzubauen, sondern die Figur dieses Dritten auch gesellschaftstheoretisch für eine Analyse der funktional differenzierten Sinnuniversen der modernen Gesellschaft zu nutzen. Neben einigen Hinweisen auf die selektive Rezeption dieser Figur in der soziologischen Klassik und grundsätzlicher Skepsis bezüglich des faktischen Analysereichtums einer Theorie des Dritten führt der vorliegende Beitrag zu einer grundsätzlichen Auseinandersetzung mit der Relation von Sozial- und Gesellschaftstheorie, wie sie Gesa Lindemann zuletzt in dieser Zeitschrift vorgeschlagen hat. Diese Auseinandersetzung mündet in den alternativen Vorschlag, die Mikrofundierung der Gesellschaftstheorie durch eine vorgeschaltete Sozialtheorie insgesamt aufzugeben.
