摘要:Trough the discussion of the batuques (black people's celebrations with the use of percussion) and the reaction they aroused, as well as of the decay of the most popular religious commemoration in Rio de Janeiro in the second half of XIXth century, this article studies eventual continuities and changes in the so called "colonial catholicism". It also examines the ambiguities of control and tolerance strategies used by both civil and catholic authorities with regard to popular religious celebrations.
