摘要:If today we live in an "information society", it may be useful to study information in earlier preindustrial periods, when cities were already important in the process of communication. This essay concentrates on five large cities of early modern Europe: Venice, Rome, Amsterdam, Paris and London. Three aspects are examined: the diffusion of information within the city, the communication about the city, and the function of the city as mediator in an international system of communications. The idea is to observe the rise, dominance and decline of different communication systems, oral, written or printed.
