摘要:The article analyzes behavior related to observance and nonobservance of labor legislation on the basis of a study of workers in sugarcane plantations in Pernambuco, a region where union leaders are struggling for legal regulation of conflicts. The author questions the belief - shared by jurists and social scientists - that observance of legal norms depends on how familiar individuals are with their rights and on how easily they can have access to courts. She demonstrates that one can only understand why workers claim their rights or fail to do so in the larger context of the network of social relations workers are part of, and shows the extend to which their behavior is subordinated to the norms that govern the relations of exchange, the obligations of giving, receiving, and repaying.
