摘要:The article examines the actual processes by which collections of personal papers are generated, from the early stages of storage of documents until the final configurations that they assume when they are organized and made public by the institutions that host them. The article discusses the multiple interventions that affect such collections and questions the direct association between personal papers and individual memory, putting the focus on the social dimensions of the production of these sources. The criteria that guide the pragmatic decisions made by archival personnel are also discussed. The steps taken towards organizing these documents make them accessible to a larger public, but at the same time they introduce an intelectual selection that convey "historical value" to certain aspects of the donors' careers and to the documents that record them. As a consequence, other documents become obscured, as they are filed in secondary slots created by the several stages pf organizing and describing the collection.
