摘要:The article discusses the role of celebrations in the construction of national memory and identity. It describes the celebrations of Brazil's 400th and 500th anniversaries, focusing on the activities that were carried on and on the intellectuals involved in their preparation and also on the problems Brazilian society and culture had to face at the end of XIX and XX centuries. While newspapers were important in 1900, TV was the great star in 2000, with its appeal to myths that support the image of Brazil retained by popular memory: those of a powerful Nature and of a melting pot of races. The sites Brazil 500 years and Brazil, another 500 (meaning 'another history') are compared as an example of political and symbolic dispute over the construction of national memory.
