摘要：This paper describes the slave population and their distribution among slaveowners at the height of the coffee economy in the Paraíba Valley (São Paulo), based on manuscripts known as livros de classificação dos escravos. As occurred in the early nineteenth century, small and medium slaveholders had a substantial share in total production and slaveholding, and the patterns of slaveholding distribution differed among the localities studied. The structure of slaveholding shows an increasing concentration in the course of that century.
