摘要：The articles examines the origins and current situation of environmental history as understood in the U.S. and other English-speaking nations. It evalutes the problems encountered by the social sciences in including environmental variables or aspects in their legitimate field of research. Some characteristics of the research and texts produced by environmental history are described. The article also makes mention of other scientific disciplines closely linked to this new field and provides information on the periodical Environmental Review . It further offers short summaries of some of the most important books in environmental history published over the last twenty years and mentions some Brazilian writes and essayists who have in different ways, today or in the past, revealed a sensitivity to environmental variables. Lastly, the text assesses how environmental history may contribute to a better understanding of Brazilian history and society.
