摘要：This paper proposes a classification of the different type of backfill (granular, stiff or masonry backup) at the extrados of vaults of historical masonry buildings scattered throughout the Iberian Peninsula.This study, in the mainframe of a broader research program, highlights the structural significance, rather disregarded in literature, of the backfill regarding the structural stability of such constructions.Furthermore, the most common patterns of the arrangement of masonry backup and backfill, as well as some structural considerations, are depicted to illustrate how to evaluate their structural contribution.
