摘要：The aim in this paper is to contribute in a quantitative style to the analysis of the emergence of new economic activities in rural areas after the crisis of traditional patterns and the unfolding of depopulation processes. Several indicators about tourism and residential functionality during the second half of the twentieth century are presented for Spain's 84 main mountain districts. Results allow for cross-section comparisons and show the very unequal spread of these new rural functions in Spain. The Pyrenees have shown a remarkable and increasing specialization in tourism and residential functions (which has dramatically contributed to several districts gaining population again), but such effects have been weaker in the other areas (except mainly for some districts in the Sistema Central).
