摘要：This paper analyzes the links between republicanism and caciquism in Asturias from 1868 to 1911. All republican parties criticized caciquism harshly, considering it as one of the country’s biggest problems. Nevertheless, some of them never ceased doing precisely what they denounced, establishing a patronage system which was almost impossible to bypass, as can been seen through the numerous complaints written by affected individuals, the private correspondence of prominent republicans as well as other primary and bibliographical sources.
