摘要：By analysing the Mexican Constitutional debates that took place in 1824, this article points at what was considered at the time the main foundations of the liberal system of government politicians wanted to establish. It shows that the congressmen identified Liberalism with representative systems, but not with democracy. It analyses the different ways to understand the nature and aims of political representation, as well as the diverse constitutional reflections derived therefrom. It is finally proposed that in order to better understand representation and political participation, it is necessary to pay attention not only to electoral processes but also to other instances and mechanisms involved in decision making that affect the political community.
