摘要：This paper aims to chart how the Basque writer Pío Baroja’s attitude as an intellectual evolved over the final years of the nineteenth and the early decades of the twentieth century, at a time when a new ‘social subject’ was emerging and becoming consolidated in Spain. It therefore analyses Baroja’s thought in relation to two of the topics of greatest concern to Spanish and European intellectuals of the day: the relationship of the individual to the mass and intellectuals’ attitude to democracy.
