摘要:This article studies the first period of the monastery of San Benito el Real in Valladolid from its foundation in 1390 to the appearance of the Benedictine Congregation of Valladolid in 1431, considering in particular the support from the king. It analyses the circumstances experienced by John I of Castile, emphasising his project of monastic reform and his wish to recover the Crown of Portugal after the military disaster at Aljubarrota. It also studies the reasons for the choice of the town, the characteristics of the royal ‘alcázar’ (castle) and the settlement of refugees from Portugal in the nearby district of ‘Rehoyo’. John I intended to found a Benedictine community inside the palace complex where the members of the royal chapel worked, but over the course of time the Benedictine community increased while the court gradually stopped making use of the monastery.
