摘要：Reading a short story is something exciting. Besides bringing pleasure it canalso enrich our knowledge that can be useful for us to learn. One of the shortstories is The House on the Hills was written by Elizabeth Laird's. The story isabout someone who fells in love with the girl that he saw in the riverside. But inthi story, there was a problem between Paul and Maria. Paul is a poor personwhile Maria is a rich. One day, her mother wanted to meet him. She talked tohim that was impossible to get married with her daughter because he is a poorperson. And she talked to him that Maria is going to be merried with rich man.Maria prefer getting married with a rich man for money than maintaining herlove with Paul. In this story, Maria as a second character has an Antagonistcharacter and it makes the writer want to know deeply. That's why the writerchooses Maria's character as the object of study in this research paper by usingthe psychological approach. The aims of this study are to analyze the Maria'scharacters in this short story and to describe about the character of Maria inpsychological perspective. This research uses a qualitative method to supportthe writing process of this study. The result of this scientific research papershows the characteristics of Maria and character of Maria in psychologicalperspective.
