摘要：ii The writer writes this research paper to find out the mastery of students inunderstanding question word. The students are the first year students in SMPN 1Jatisari in VIIF class, in the academic years 2008-2009. The problems of thisresearch are how is the percentage of students errors concerned to the usage ofquestion word and what is the mastery of students in understanding questionword.The aims of this research are to find out the percentage of students errorsconcerned to the usage of question word and to find out the mastery of studentsin understanding question word. In this research, the writer uses quantitativemethod which is concerned with analyzing data in a numerical form. The data inthis research is taken from the result of test which is given to the first yearstudents in SMPN 1 jatisari in VIIF class. Based on the research, the writerrealizes that the students still have difficulties in using question word. It isproved that there still many errors in using question word. The percentage oferrors is 61, 25% and the average score is 38, 75 (failing or unsatisfactory)which shows that the ability of students in understanding question word is stillweak.
