  • 摘要:Literature is traditionally described as the body of writing that exists because ofinherent imaginative and artistic qualities. And novel is one of literary works.The novel that is used in this thesis was Pelzers work. Pelzers writing style issimple at best, he relies on language that was developed from a childsviewpoint. What makes the book so compelling is the tale itself, as Pelzerdescribes incident after incident of cruel torture at his mothers hands and theineffective and lame efforts of his father to protect him. This book is a perfectexample of how the human spirit can provide strength in the toughest ofsituations. Daves spirit helped him to survive from his mother sick games,David used willpower. Through all of her torturous games, Davids innerstrength began to emerge. The aims of this study are to find out the causes andimpacts of alcoholism on Roerva, Daves mother, as the second main characterin A Child Called It. The writer chooses a qualitative descriptive researchmethod. The data in this research are also qualitative data. The writer uses thisresearch method because the source of the data is novel and novel consist ofwords so to analyze it the writer has to describe what is in the novel. To knowmore detailed and accurate about alcoholism, the psychological approach hasbeen chosen to analyze these novels. Based on the analysis the writer concludesthat the causes of alcoholism on Roerva, Daves mother can be divided into;psychological factor, including: a need to relief for anxiety, ongoing depression,unresolved problem and low selfesteem, and social factor, including: socialacceptance of alcohol, availability of alcohol, and stressful lifestyle. Whereas,the impacts of alcoholism on Roerva cover; first, physical impact; in the form ofmemory disorder, second, emotional/psychological factor, including; maritaland relationship, difficulties, depression, and child abuse, third, social impact,including; violent crime and lost work productivity.
