摘要：This research paper analyzes the errors had been made by the learners inchanging direct and indirect speech: changing of tenses, changing of pronounand changing of adverb of time signals and place. The writer asked for thelearners in the third year students of Faculty of Letters, Gunadarma Universityin the academic year of 2008-2009 as the population of study. The researchmethod that is used in this paper is quantitative method. The aim of thisresearch is to find out what kinds of errors that the students might have inchanging direct speech into indirect speech and indirect speech into directspeech. The total sample is 30 students from 3SA01. The result of study willshow analysis of errors made by the sample on each number in terms of findingdifficulties in using reported speech: changing of tenses, changing of pronounand changing of adverb of time signals. It was divided in two terms, changingdirect speech into indirect speech and changing indirect speech into directspeech. The percentage of errors showed 39, 32 % students still founddifficulties in changing direct speech into indirect speech and 36, 67 % inchanging indirect speech into direct speech.
