摘要:ABSTRACT :The aim of this study is to describing shift in meaning and shift in phoneticfeatures from French loan words into English. This research will analyze twoEnglish literatures which were written by Middle English author represented byChaucer The Wife of Bath compared with Modern English author representedby Shakespeare Twelfth Night or What You Will. This research usesqualitative method. It means all the data are in the form of words and sentences.By description the data will help the readers to understand the differences ofFrench loan words in Middle and modern English in form of meaning andphonetic transcription. The result of the analysis shows that there are shift inmeaning and phonetic features from French loan words into English. The factorthat influence shift in phonetic is the Great Vowel Shift. It changed thepronunciation from Middle to Modern English. None of the shift describe hereare happened overnight. They were gradual and probably difficult to discernwhile they were in progress. It is helpful to consider that English language likeall living language is in continuous state of variation across time. The languageof one generation of speakers will differ slightly from another.
