摘要:There are many methods used in teaching English. In this thesis the writer usestwo different methods, grammar translation method and direct method as acomparative study to find the effective methods in teaching reading. The writerobserved two groups namely Group A who were taught by using grammartranslation method and Group B by using direct method. The aims of this thesisare to find out the similarities and differences between grammar translationmethod and direct method, to describe the problems faced by the teacher whendirect method and grammar translation method applied in teaching reading, todescribe the solutions used by the teacher to overcome the problems whendirect method and grammar translation method applied in teaching reading andto describe the method that is more effective in teaching reading class. Theresults of the analysis shows that students are more interested in learningreading by using grammar translation method than using direct method. As theresult of the study shows that t observed = 5.143 and the table t = 1.835(observed t > table t). It means that teaching reading using grammar translationmethod is more effective than using direct method. The similarities betweenGrammar-Translation Method and Direct Method in teaching reading class onthe writer pointâs view one of them is exploiting one of the skills in teachingEnglish that is reading. The Problems Faced by the teacher is students still haveless understanding about the grammatical rules of the target language. TheSolutions Used by the teacher that she has to review the lesson, tells the contentof the text, and asks if there are difficult words.
