  • 摘要:The reason why the writer interested in analyzing similes is because it is important to know thecontextual meaning of the similes in the lyrics of English love songs. There are so many similesincluded in the song lyrics especially in love song. Similes are one of the most frequently usedfigures of speech. Therefore, the writer focused on researching the contextual meaning of similesin the lyrics of English love songs. The major aims of this research are to describe three kinds ofsimiles and to explain the contextual meaning of similes in the lyrics of English love songs. Thisresearch uses descriptive qualitative method. By using this method, the writer collected the datawhich relate to the research. The use of this method is related to the problem formulationdiscussed in this research, which focused on explaining the contextual meaning of similes in thelyrics of English love songs. The sources of the data were taken from fifty four lyrics from fortyfive singers. The result of this research shows that the kinds of similes are similes using verbs,similes using nouns and similes using adjectives. The markers of those similes are “like”, “as”and “as…as”. Similes marked by the word “like” is the most frequently used. And the similesusing nouns becomes the most frequent subcategory. The meaning of similes in the lyrics ofEnglish love songs varies depending on the context
