摘要：Este artigo investiga a instabilidade dos símbolos em Moby Dick, de Herman Melville, e o perigo que a leitura simbólica representa tanto para os marujos do Pequod, navio capitaneado por Ahab, quanto para os leitores do romance. Se Ishmael, por um lado, habita as fronteiras do texto e por isso converte-se na única testemunha possível do naufrágio, ou seja, aquela que apaga seus traços identitários para poder narrar o que vivenciou, Ahab, por outro lado, investe na suposta concretude dos símbolos e, assim, desfaz-se juntamente com a dissolução do sentido primeiro atribuído à busca pela baleia branca, Moby Dick. Com o naufrágio do Pequod, o símbolo explicativo submerge para dar lugar a uma textualidade errante.
其他摘要：This study investigates the instability of the symbols in Moby Dick, by Herman Melville, and the dangers of a symbolic reading both to the crew of the Pequod and the reader of the novel. If Ishmael, on the one hand, inhabits the borders of the text and, therefore, becomes the only possible witness to the shipwreck – that is to say – the one who erases his traces of identity so that he can narrate his experience – Ahab, on the other hand, invests in the alleged concreteness of the symbols and, for this reason, submerges along with the meanings he first attributed to his quest. Together with the sinking of the Pequod, the symbols submerge to make way for an errant textuality.
