摘要:This paper proposes to identify the wooden frame depicted on a Roman relief from Forli with the tendicula known through Latin literature. The cloth stretching operations performed on this device are rightly related to the ars fullonia , and therefore to the ancient Roman woollen industry, as it is mentioned in some Seneca’s and Agustine’s texts (1 st and late 4 th -early 5 th centuries respectively), since the writings of the later enlighten the meaning of the former. Moreover, this paper proves that the operations developped on the tendiculae and Seneca’s reference, in contrast to Blümner’s hypothesis (1875, reedition of 1912), are not related to the cloth pressing. The iconographical analysis demonstrates this linguistic interpretation and it is based on the preserved images, dated to the Classical Antiquity.
