摘要:This article places into perspective the role of the Havana Naval Shipyard during the eighteenth century and its contribution at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The Spanish navy made a major effort to overtake the English during the century, with the struggle for supremacy in America standing as the centerpiece of the Bourbons' reformist agenda. In this context, Havana and its local elite were vital to Spain's emerging power in the Caribean, especially the shipyard, which accounted for the largest number of warships constructed for the eighteenth-century navy. Owing to their quality, these vessels constituted the heart of the Spanish navy, at least between 1763 and 1805 and many were at Trafalgar. Until the present, nevertheless, no one has highlighted the contribution of the Cuban shipyard or its connection to the combat that transpired in 1805.
