摘要:The Abolition of Slavery in Brazil raises the following questions: what was the social character of abolitionism? What historical meaning did it have? Was it a revolution or simply a step in the transition towards capitalism in the country? What interests did the abolition movement defend? What social groups were the movement’s protagonists? What role did the slave play in the process? What did the abolitionist intellectuals defend and whom did they represent? These are the questions that lead this article to reflect on the relationship between where the intellectuals stood and the possibilities and limitations of joining forces, or the «construction» of a slave and free population as a national class at the end of the period of slavery in Brazil.
