摘要:This study reports quantitative socio-economic assessment of biofuel production potential of castor and jatropha. Survey approach showed that average net profits gained by small holders from food crops sale at each household per every harvesting season was greater than that from castor plant occupying 0.05 hectares of cropland. However, the earnings saved at each household became higher using oils extracted from seed of castor or jatropha as 2.53 and 1.06 GJ of energy was obtained from each. In doing so, the returns saved at each household in substituting castor or jatropha biodiesel for petro-diesel was Birr 137.20 and 307.70, respectively. Castor feedstock created employment opportunity for 355 people in the study area. Cost benefit analysis (CBA) showed projected demand and annual cash inflows for only 5% substitution of annual rate of growth of petro-diesel consumption of Ethiopia was statistically significant (P<0.05). Financial analysis indicated that discounted payback period (DPB) for castor is 6.05 years and jatropha is 6.08 years. The value of internal rate of return (IRR) is 26.9% for castor and 26.6% for jatropha. Finally, net present value (NPV) confirmed that both projects were economically viable.
