  • 摘要:A study was carried out to treat wastewater produced by a food manufacturing and processing factory by the application of combined anaerobic treatment systems. Two pairs of two phase treatment systems involved in this study which were the combination of UASB-AF and HUASB-AF. The HUASB and AF reactors were packed with palm oil shell as support media to promote growth of microorganisms that will enhance the substrate removal efficiency. The two pairs of reactor systems were operated simultaneously. Each system was fed with raw food manufacturing wastewater taken from Azhar Food Manufacturing Factory located in Rengit, Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia. R1 treatment system was operated with the OLR ranged from 2.32 g COD/L.d up to 12.71 g COD/L.d; whereas R2 treatment system was operated with OLR ranged from 2.32 g COD/L.d up to 14.9 g COD/L.d. Gas formation and production was monitored and measured throughout the study. The biogas production varied from 1344.27 mL/g COD to 11,077.13 mL/g COD. Parameters measured to evaluate the performance of the process were pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia-nitrogen (NH_3-N), oil and grease and total phosphorus (TP). Throughout the operation period, the R2 treatment system showed good stability at high loading rate and better efficiency as compared to R1 system. The highest removal for R1-U and R1-AF (R1 system) were observed on day 244 and 142 with 97.8% and 99% COD removal efficiency respectively. Meanwhile, the highest removal for R2-H and R2-AF (R2 system) were observed on day 134 and 136 with both achieving 99% COD removal efficiency.
