摘要:A purple non sulphur phototrophic bacterium was isolated from leather industry effluents near Warangal, India and its ability to reduce hexavalent chromium was examined in this study. Free cells of Rhodopseudomonas palustris could reduce about 28 M of chromium under anaerobic light conditions. Immobilization of cells resulted in enhanced reduction of chromium. Of all, alginate entrapment could reduce chromate up to 36 µM. Both free and immobilized cells could reduce chromium even on the 20~(th) day. It could tolerate up to 52 µM of chromium. Studies on chromate reductase have shown that the enzyme is not an inducible enzyme and was present in the cell whether chromate was present or not. Optimal chromate reduction took place at 36 °C and pH 6.6. Among the major metal inhibitors of chromate reductase, CdSO_4 at 6 mM concentration caused significant inhibition of the enzyme activity.
