摘要:This paper presents the impact of mechanical deweeding on benthic community assemblages before and after deweeding at different sites in two different basins namely Hazratbal and Nishat basin of Dal Lake. The species composition showed great variation at deweeding sites of each basin, in Hazratbal basin 9 taxa observed before deweeding and only 6 taxa were recovered after deweeding. While as, in Nishat basin 10 taxa observed before deweeding and only 7 taxa recovered after deweeding. Most benthic taxa counted were significantly more abundant before deweeding. Species like Lymnea stagnalis, Aelosoma sp., Lymnea auricularia., and Radix ovata were found completely eliminated after deweeding. Certain taxa like Tubifex tubifex, Limnodrillus hofmeisteri, Branchiura sowerbyi and Chironomus sp., were showed very high recovery rates witnessed by their presence immediately after few days of deweeding, thereby reflecting their high colonising potential in the soft mud rich in organic matter In Hazratbal basin, significant differences (P < 0.05) was oberved in benthic community before and after deweeding. However, Nishat basin showed tendency towards the significance. Extended deweeding cautions regarding the loss of benthic fauna in the long run which have started shown signs of low recovery for a few benthic species.
