摘要:When Mateo Vázquez of Leca was named personal secretary of Philip II in 1573, many courtiers were surprised by this decision. Until then, Vázquez had only been a secretary of Cardinal Espinosa. In this article we attempt to understand the reasons behind this decision, investigating the working methods of Vázquez (so appreciated by Philip II), the books that composed the professional library of the secretary, and the materials of his desk. The following observations are based on a series of letters sent by Vázquez, as well as on the account books of his house and inventories of his properties. This documentation is kept largely in the archive of Instituto de Valencia de Donjuán (Madrid).
