  • 摘要:Given the competing but different attractions of city and rural life – where to choose? Can we have both? These are perennial questions: in his Epigrams, Book 12 we learn that the poet Martial envied his friend Sparsus who enjoyed the country in the city (rus in urbe) by living on Rome’s Gianicolo hill. The Gianicolo is still a park, two millennia later, because of the great value placed upon green spaces in densely populated cities. Long-established cities have generally grown up in largely unplanned ways, accreting districts and leaving some areas open other than by design. Nowadays both the creation of new cities and the redevelopment of decaying urban areas will involve urban designers and planners who will usually (hopefully) ensure that ‘lungs’ are left in the city, where people can relax, breathe fresher air, enjoy some physical activities and the beauty of the landscape, and perhaps watch wildlife.
