The purpose of this paper was to analyze scientific studies on overtraining. The survey included online documentary analysis of the publications in the Pubmed database, which included articles that emphasized the key-word "overtraining” and, more specifically, articles that discussed and/or analyzed heart rate variability. The paper reached two conclusions. First, longitudinal studies seem to be more suitable to monitoring the athlete’s heart rate variability. Second, heart rate variability seems to be an excellent indicator, along with other markers, to understand the overtraining syndrome.
