摘要：The objetive of this study was to understand the conception of family that nurses adopted during their practice. The phenomenological method was opted for the nurses. Data were collected by means of interviews, oriented to the fog questions: Whats your fanily conception? How do you work in your daily activity with the family? Nine nurses took park of this study. Their reports revealed that: 1) family means people living together, with or without any type of consaguinity; they take care of each other, maintain affective links and support; 2) family has the fuction of taking care, protect, give love and discipline; and 3) The nurses practice in the assistance process is centered in orientations about diagnosis and therapeutic. Nurses recognize the importance of the family on their acting but they emphasize the difficulty to act in this area and a few of them have a family as unit of care.
