摘要:The aim of this study was to understand the experience of the mother-student when separating from the newly born child by the time of the return to the school activities. This is part of results of a project that investigated the undergraduate students experience of motherhood. Symbolic interactionism and grounded theory were used as theoretical-methodological framework. Sixteeen nursing students of a public university of the city of São Paulo participated in the study. This study describe the category SUFFERING THE IMPACT OF THE SEPARATION FROM THE NEWLY BORN CHILD which had the subcategories: living the conflicts of maternal role and coping with the difficulties to keep breastfeeding. To the mother-student the attachment and the meaning of motherhood need to be re-elaborated when the option of not giving up the academic-professional life project is done, running the risk to perpetuate contradictory and ambiguous feeelings in her maternal role.
