  • 摘要:The aim of this study was to understand the experience of the mother-student when separating from the newly born child by the time of the return to the school activities. This is part of results of a project that investigated the undergraduate students experience of motherhood. Symbolic interactionism and grounded theory were used as theoretical-methodological framework. Sixteeen nursing students of a public university of the city of São Paulo participated in the study. This study describe the category – SUFFERING THE IMPACT OF THE SEPARATION FROM THE NEWLY BORN CHILD – which had the subcategories: “living the conflicts of maternal role” and “coping with the difficulties to keep breastfeeding”. To the mother-student the attachment and the meaning of motherhood need to be re-elaborated when the option of not giving up the academic-professional life project is done, running the risk to perpetuate contradictory and ambiguous feeelings in her maternal role.
