摘要:A comparison of the French Situationists in twentieth-century Paris and the British Aesthetes in nineteenth-century London. Each sought, in their different ways, to document the lived experience of inhabiting urban space, favouring subjective impression to objective information, and the exigencies of pleasure to those of utility. These experiments, however, took very different forms—map-like collages in the case of the Situationists, and lyric poems in that of the Aesthetes. These forms, I will argue, are indicative of the groups’ very different investments in the value of a properly historical understanding of modernity.
