摘要:This work intends to identify the causes of the observed changes in income inequality across the agricultural regions of Rio Grande do Sul between 1996 and 2005. There are many studies analyzing income inequality, but few try to identify its causes and even fewer examine the rural areas. The results presented here suggest that those changes in income inequality have three main reasons: (1) changes in the total production, (2) schooling, and (3) the reallocation of workers among different income classes. The reductions in income inequality do not seem to be a consequence of the development of some regions, as the Kuznets hypothesis could suggest; they have been caused rather by the increasing number of workers receiving low level wages.
