摘要：A história do conhecimento se confunde com a própria história da humanidade, visto que é no humano, ou melhor, é na caminhada do tornar-se humano que o conhecimento se constrói na relação com o outro. Não existe o humano desassociado do conhecimento, mas é sobre as diferentes formas de conhecer que a ciência deu seusprimeiros passos emancipando a si e a homens e mulheres, como seres históricos, sociais e culturais. Da mesma forma que o humano foi tornando-se mais razoável consigo, com o outro e com a natureza estabeleceu relações mediadas por diferentes instrumentos culturais. Tais artefatos se manifestam através do avanço tecnológico, social e cultural que se acumula nas diferentes formas de viver e conviver das sociedades contemporâneas. E aescola, principalmente a educação escolar básica, define-se como espaço privilegiado de acesso ao saber culturalque vem sendo acumulado de geração em geração, tornando-se essencial uma compreensão acerca dos passos históricos da ciência quando se discute a racionalidade que orienta o ensino como herança social e cultural, temática central desse texto.
