The Relation ofPsychometric Scales with Cortisol Concentration in AthleticPerformance in Team Sports: A Systematic Review.JEPonline 2018;21(4):20-40. The purpose of this study wasto systematically analyze scientific publications on therelation of psychometric scales and cortisol concentrationsand its interactions with athletic performance in professionalteam sports. The methodology used followed the PreferredReporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses(PRISMA) guidelines. The inclusion criteria were: (a) studies published between 1999 and present; (b) studies written in English; (c) studies that sampledonly high-level adult athletes; and (d) studies that analyzed athletic performance that alsoconsidered both the cortisol concentrations and psychometric variables. After applying theinclusion criteria, a total of 10 studies were included in this review. The studies reportednegative changes in the athletes’ mood state after the competition for the defeated teams. With regard to the relation between athletic performance with cortisol concentrations, somestudies reported an increase in cortisol concentration in athletes from the defeated teams andother studies reported an increase in cortisol in athletes from the winning teams. Hence, while the application of Profile of Mood States (POMS) seems to be more sensitive tochanges after competition, the moments before the game, questionnaires directed to anxietypresent more interesting results during the moments before the competition. In addition, sincethe increase on cortisol concentration can be related to many internal and external factors(such as opponent level, playing in the hometown or not, the duration of the match, and theathletes’ individuality) that may compromise the athletes’ chances of winning, the post-matcheffects on the cortisol remain unclear.
