Effects of Aerobic Trainingversus Resistance Training on Body Composition and SystemicBiochemical Parameters of Overweight or Obese Adults. JEPonline2018;21(2):227-239. The aim of this study was to compare theeffects of aerobic versus strength training on body composition andbiochemical parameters in 37 overweight/obese adults. Subjectswere randomly assigned to 3 groups: control (n=11); aerobic training(AT n=11), and resistance training (RT n=15). The training protocolwas performed 3 times·wk-1, 30 to 50 min over a 12-wk period. TheAT was performed on a treadmill, intensity varying between 65 and80% of the HR max. The RT consisted of 8 exercises, 3 to 4 setswith 10 to 20 maximal reps. Before and after the training period, body composition was estimated by bioimpedance. Fasting serumconcentrations of glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDLcholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartateaminotransferase were analyzed. Results indicate that AT showed agreater reduction in body mass (-1.79 vs. 0.41 kg), BMI (-0.74 vs.0.11 kg·m-2), and body fat mass (-2.64 vs. 0.83 kg) (P<0.05)compared to RT. Fat percentage differed significantly only betweenthe AT vs. control group (-2.78 vs. -0.18%). The 12-wk period of ATwas the more efficient for the reduction of total body mass, BMI, andbody fat mass in comparison to RT in overweight and obese adults.
